“Foundations of Honor Study Guide” – Danny Silk

Building a Powerful Community

We’ve never reviewed both a book and a DVD series…until now. The same rock solid material that we’re accustomed to with Pastor Danny Silk is evident in this book and DVD series, which complement each other. The material is more or less a compilation of solutions to the questions, challenges, and obstacles presented by adopters of Silk’s teamwork resources over the years. Developing a ministry or business dedicated to the realities of Heaven isn’t without challenge, and this series attempts to field the top questions posed to Danny in a practical yet impressionable way.

Danny invites several ‘powerful’ people into the fold in this useful study series, and real life examples from culturally adept leaders prove to be an effective way to reinforce the honor-fostering culture, whether it be in ministry or business (both are interviewed as part of the DVD/CD set). The content is completely original and very much indicative of what Bethel Church has been able to sustain and cultivate, so its value for individuals and teams is immeasurable. Its organization and presentation, however, could be better. As a whole though and with formalities aside, the wisdom and boundless principles packed into this resource set lead me to recommend this to any team, advising board, council or individual, without reservation.

Book Review: Culture of Honor

“Culture of Honor” – Danny Silk

Sustaining A Supernatural Environment

As our first ever A+ score, Danny Silk’s ‘Culture of Honor’ has taken up the #1 spot on my all time personal book list (not including books of the Bible or Bruce Catton’s Civil War series). Bethel Church’s Family Life Pastor speaks with authority, experience and a surplus of testimony on the topic of cultivating and maintaining an environment fit to overflow with honor and upright identity.

Far and away the most powerful tool that Silk brandishes in laying out the ways and means of an honorable culture is the case of Bethel Church in Redding, CA, where he serves as a leader and pastor. Just as a seasoned entrepreneur could tutor and impart in business, so does Silk with the active testimony that he and his peers have, in fact, instituted an atmosphere of honor at Bethel. This is an essential book for ministry leaders and business leaders that are passionate about fostering a work environment that honors God and practically applies the Golden Rule with every meeting, presentation, email, or transaction.

Book Review – A New Birth of Freedom

“A New Birth of Freedom” – Steve Forbes

Vision for America

Entrepreneur & Political Commentator, Steve Forbes, charts a simple yet profound course for America’s rebirth with his 1999 book, A New Birth of Freedom. A 1996 republican candidate for president and longtime editor of Forbes Magazine, Forbes proposes policies and methods throughout from a place of authority and sense. Covering topics from the tax code to the environment, few stones are left unturned in this manual of sorts fashioned to cut waste and focus on what matters most to Americans.

A New Birth of Freedom reads more like Forbes’ blueprint for his presidential bid than a compelling charge for Americans to reconsider republican ideals. With that said, I’m more than content to trade elegant language for something that’s straight forward and worthwhile! In delivering a worthwhile and judicious read, Forbes should be commended also for his common sense positions and free market tendencies. With many of his petitions either replicated today by conservative thinkers or re-purposed in some form in the political circuit, the bulk of what Forbes details in this book is nothing short of visionary.

Book Review: Beyond the Laces

“Beyond the Laces” – Bob Salomon

Salomon and Young deliver a memorable and stirring tale of kindness and redemption with their children’s book Beyond the Laces. Sports stars from across the land have given the book two thumbs up, from Dodgers manager and Hall of Fame Hopeful, Don Mattingly, to ESPN football analysts Herman Edwards and Ron JaworksiThis heartwarming tale is paired nicely with vivid illustrations and nostalgic rhyme and verse, making it enjoyable not just for young sports fans, but everyone!

With the fall season comes many exciting things for the sports enthusiast. MLB’s post season, college and professional basketball on the horizon, and most evidently: FOOTBALL. Football and the falling leaves and crisp air seem to coincide and work together to bring about a spirit of anticipation. This spirit is captured in BTL and along with it is a message that our youth must hear: people do indeed care and kindness can change everything.

Book Review: The Dude’s Guide to Manhood

“The Dude’s Guide to Manhood” – Darrin Patrick

Finding True Manliness in a World of Counterfeits

With a foreword written by none other than Duck Dynasty’s Willie Robertson, this trumpet call for true masculinity amidst a culture of paternal weaklings starts off with a bang and never really lets up. Although Patrick’s overhaul of the current American male status does not quite qualify as being Eldredge-esque, it does however serve as the perfect men’s small group supplement, with plenty of time-tested truths that all men should hear and heed.

The Dude’s Guide to Manhood comes complete with a lot of high praise, including endorsements from Rick Warren, John Piper, Craig Groeschel, and St. Louis Cardinals’ all stars Adam Wainwright and Matt Holliday. If that lineup doesn’t motivate you to read this book (in the manliest way you know how) I’m not sure what would. Author Darrin Patrick touches on all of the right points that men tend to struggle with like humility, devotion, and discipline, and yet is astute enough to offer sound insight for those men suffering from identity crisis in the face of a counter-masculine American culture.
